New liposomes in Nanomedicine

The liposomes are very much reliable in drug delivery of various hydrophylic and hydrophobic drugs at low concentrations to the targeted sites when compared to the free drug ingestions. The liposomes are the spherical, unit membrane like structures having a core void space inside which is filled with the drug, are made up of phospholipids. Normally the natural egg phosphotidy choline is used in the preparation of liposomes. Synthetic liposomes such as DSPE (Di stearoyl phosphotidyl ethanolamine) are also used in the preparation of liposomes. The formation of liposomes is like the intrafolding of the lipid thinlayers into spherical structures. The folding is due to the unfavourable bonding between the lipids and the water. In order to stabilize these forces the layers arranged into circular spherical structures.

Recently, liposomes of controlled release are of utmost importance. These can also be called as smart liposomes, as they act according to the stimulus that was programmed during their synthesis. The new liposomes were having the gold, iron oxide nanoparticles in the lipid layers. The incorporation of these hydrophobic nanoparticles into the liposomes added a functionality to them. The basic principle is that these metal nanoparticles are hyperthermic, i.e. on giving a suitable radiation either by laser or my RF magnetic field these nanoparticles emit heat. The heat causes the bilayer to melt and then the release of the drug present inside the liposome. This kind of new liposomes are very much advanced and beneficial in having them inside the body for long time and can release the drug for much time and also when needed. The side effects of the drug is minimized by this kind of new novel liposomes.
